2015 has been a good year for Antonino Salon and Spa. Along with celebrating 30 years in business, the salon was named Best Salon in Hour Detroit’s Best of 2015 issue. So, on July 20, the staff of Antonino Salon and Spa celebrated by going on a “surprise” field trip. Beginning in Birmingham, everyone loaded a bus from The Detroit Bus Company and headed to one of Detroit’s best lunch places; Mudgies. Located in Detroit’s historic Corktown district, Mudgies is an authentic artisan deli that has been voted best deli for six consecutive years.

After a delicious lunch of various sandwiches and appetizers, everyone boarded the bus and began a tour of the city of Detroit.

“We wanted to educate our younger stylists to the history of Detroit, and expose everyone to the new and exciting things happening in the city”, says Anthony, owner of Antonino Salon, adding “as hairdressers, it’s important to know about all the happenings in our great city so we can share them with our guests”.

With stops at Lincoln Street Art Park and Rivard Plaza and drive-by tours of Michigan Central Station, the Boston Edison district, the Ford Piquette Plant, the D.I.A., Cass Corridor, the Dequindre Cut and Lafayette Park, the staff learned many interesting facts about the city that they never knew before.

After the tour, everyone was treated to a private tour by local artist, William Singer of one of Detroit’s newest hot spots, The Red Bull House of Art; a gallery that breaks down the barriers between artists and their next greatest body of work by removing financial and institutional constraints and presenting the tools, space and wings necessary to unleash their utmost creative side to the world.

The fun day was capped off at Detroit City Distillery where everyone was treated to one of their signature cocktails, created with small batch artisanal whiskey, gin and vodka using only the finest local ingredients sourced directly from farms nearby and tasting rooms located in Detroit’s famed Eastern Market.

Antonino Salon and Spa prides itself on being innovative and up to date on all the current hair cutting and coloring techniques.

One of the things that make us special is the exclusive hair color line that we use; Primary Syn. This one of a kind hair color line was designed by hairdressers with hairdressers in mind. Using the smallest amount of ammonia possible (smaller than any other hair color company in existence), it leaves the hair in better condition after a hair color service than before. Primary Syn (syn being short for synergy) gives the  hairdresser a complete color palette, so they can create a personalized color formula that is unique to each client. “Clients can be assured that their hair color is truly ‘one of a kind’ and made especially for them”, says Anthony Marsalese, owner of Antonino Salon and Spa and Artistic Director for Primary Syn Hair Color.

Toni Coleman, owner of Primary Syn, meets personally with salon owners to see if they are a fit for her Primary Syn family. She only teams up with salons that have high integrity and choose to carry only top end products, while having a deep commitment to advanced education.

We are proud of our affiliation with Primary Syn and feel honored to be a part of their family and invite you to visit us to see why we are the best hair colorists in Birmingham.

Be sure to check out this video and visit our gallery to see images from past Primary Syn Photo Shoots. Watch for new images soon from our upcoming photo shoot being shot in Downtown Detroit in October, 2014.

Michigan Fash Fest-Fall, 2014

Michigan Fash Fest-Fall, 2014

Detroit has taken another step in proving to the world it has come back. On June 19, Anna Wintour , the Artistic Director of Conde Naste publications and editor in chief of Vogue Magazine, came to our city to promote the opening of a new exhibit at The DIA; “Detroit-Bruce Weber“. The new exhibit features photos the legendary photographer has taken of “ordinary folk” in our great city. Weber first visited Detroit in 2006, when he photographed an expansive spread featuring Kate Moss for W magazine. He returned last year to capture images used for a Shinola ad campaign.  Weber is best known for his work on Calvin Klein ads, and spreads for Abercrombie and Fitch, Vogue and Vanity Fair.

Antonino Salon and Spa owner, Anthony Marsalese was invited to visit Anna Wintour four times during her two day visit to style her signature hairstyle. The last minute invitation required some rescheduling, but every client on Anthony’s schedule encouraged him to take advantage of this “once in a lifetime opportunity”. So the big question everyone wanted to know…………”No, she is nothing like the character, Miranda Priestly, portrayed by Meryl Streep in the hit movie “The Devil Wears Prada“, says Anthony. Within the first five minutes of meeting her, she made both Anthony and Todd Scogg of Todd’s Room (who was invited to do her makeup), very comfortable “She was very pleasant, very appreciative and professional” remarked Anthony, adding “she is obviously an extremely  busy women with tremendous responsibilities.

Be sure to visit the DIA before the exhibition closes on September 7, 2014 to see Weber’s wonderful tribute to Detroit.
