Antonino Salon and Spa, already the leading purveyor and stylists of exclusive, couture patented human hair enhancements by Sherri Renee, is continuing to stay on the cutting edge of restoring confidence lost due to hair loss by now offering the most advanced alternative treatment for hair loss:  Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)

Scalp Microprigmentation (SMP) is the ultimate in non-surgical male and female follicle replication; an incredible life changing treatment where natural pigments are applied at the epidermal level of the scalp to replicate the natural appearance of hair follicles.

What is Scalp Micropigmentation?  It is a non-invasive treatment that uses detailed micro-needles to deposit pigment into the scalp. The result creates the appearance of tiny hair follicles that help thicken and restore the look of fuller hair.  Micropigmentation refers to medical tattooing of the scalp used for camouflaging purposes.  The SMP treatment can restore receded hairlines, thicken remaining hair, camouflage transplant scarring, and create the look of close-cropped hair.

When a woman loses her hair, she usually experiences diffuse thinning. This means she loses hair fairly evenly across her entire scalp, but is unlikely to go totally bald, and her frontal hairline will almost certainly remain intact. Since the contrast between the scalp and the hair makes the thinning more apparent, this enables SMP to be used very effectively in her favor.  SMP treatments provide the look of more follicles, adding density to the scalp.  SMP can be used to camouflage the thinning either as a standalone procedure for someone who chooses not to wear a hair enhancement or it can be combined with a hair enhancement to create the illusion of density when the enhancement is not being worn or can’t be worn such as in the water.

When a man loses his hair, generally he goes bald in a set pattern that includes recession of his frontal hairline, and thinning of the crown, followed by the gradual onset of total baldness.  SMP can be used to camouflage baldness either as a standalone procedure for someone who doesn’t want to undergo a hair transplant or it can be combined with a hair transplant (afterward as needed or desired) to enhance a surgical result.  At other times, SMP can be used to camouflage all scars, whether they are FUE/FUT, Strip, Plug, or a linear donor scar.

For men and women who suffer hair loss from Alopecia, Traction Alopecia, chemotherapy, or radiation, SMP offers a cutting edge, natural looking alternative. For men, SMP can produce a natural buzz cut or edged up look. For women, SMP can simulate hair follicles beneath thinning hair, resulting in fuller looking hair with a far less patchy appearance.  SMP can also be used as to bridge the time period of regrowth for chemotherapy or radiation patients.

When a man receives SMP, the purpose is to replicate individual shaven hair follicles. However, when a woman is treated, the primary goal is to reduce the contrast between the hair and the bare scalp. This difference is important, because it totally changes the technicians approach.

SMP is as much an art as it is a science and our certified and licensed SMP technician Reagan Hart has extensive experience performing micropigmentation.  As an artist, she utilizes skill and trained judgment in knowing which hairline style fits a person’s head as well as getting the tonality right to produce the correct shading effect.  She recognizes that your natural hair follicles don’t always naturally grow in the same direction.  She will replicate the natural ebbing and idiosyncrasies of your hair pattern.  She also understands that your hair follicles are not all the same shade and frequently uses 2-3 shades of pigment to create the most realistic finish- giving a younger more confident 3D hairline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it detectable?

SMP has become such an effective hair loss solution because of its consistently natural and undetectable results. Reagan prides herself on the ability to seamlessly replicate each individual hair follicle to create a perfect match for each client.

How many treatments should I expect?

SMP should never be considered a one treatment process.  Most clients can expect between 2-4 sessions to complete their treatment depending on the extent of hair loss or scarring.  These treatments are usually spaced about 10-20 days apart.  Each session takes approximately 3-5 hours dependent on each individual case and scope of surface area to be covered.  On average there are 2,000 hair follicles per square inch on the human head so this is a very tedious procedure that requires time, expertise and patience.  There is a Smart TV in the procedure room equipped with Netflix for our client’s relaxation and enjoyment during their treatment.

How long do the results last?

After completion of your treatment (2-4 sessions) a client should expect the strength of the color to last for 3-5 years.  Over a longer term, a client will very gradually begin to notice slight lightening (not discolor) of the treatment.  When this occurs they can undergo a brief “touch up” session to restore any fading and secure many more years of their style.

Will it change color like tattoos?

No.  The pigments we use are 100% organic with no color additives and are formulated specifically for SMP and the scalp; they are not traditional tattoo inks or permanent makeup pigments which are made up of blue, green and purple constituent colors.  The pigments we use cannot break down into other colors because they contain NO CONSTITUENT COLORS.  This is critical.  The pigment will only lighten, not discolor over an extended time.

SMP also utilizes different equipment than traditional tattooing, ensuring the needle and machine are designed specifically for micropigmentation of the scalp.

What equipment is used for a SMP procedure?

The machine we use is specifically made for Scalp Micropigmentation and includes a digital power source, a hand-piece, and disposable micro needles for the insertion of pigment.  The micro needles we use are 75% smaller than commercially available tattoo needles, resulting in smaller follicle replications and more realistic results.  Most technicians of SMP use different equipment than standard tattoo artists to ensure the deposits are delicately placed at the appropriate depth in the skin.

Do I need to take time off work?

SMP is non-invasive and requires no down time. In most cases, you will not need to take any extended time away from work, school, or other functions.  After treatment it is common to notice slight redness on the scalp for 2-3 days post session.  This redness subsides quickly and most clients return to work either right away or within a couple days.  Clients are also allowed to wear hats or headwear should they feel the need.

How do I choose a hairline?

If you are unsure of what style or type of hairline will work for you, Reagan will be there to help. With artistic experience on how to fit a hairline to head shape and age, she can help recommend what’s best.  Over the course of your sessions you can also tweak and adjust the hairline for a perfect result.

(MEN) If I have hair left, can I leave it long?

Depending upon the pattern and extent of the thinning hair, some clients are able to maintain a longer length of hair.  SMP can help thicken areas so that less of the scalp is seen showing through.  However, if there is a strong pattern of hair loss or just not a lot of hair density left, the client is recommended to crop it shorter.

Can SMP camouflage my transplant scar?

Yes!  By replicating tiny hair follicles inside the scarring and blending the color around the scarring area, transplant and surgical scars can see massive improvement in concealment.

Does the procedure hurt?

For most clients, the pain minimal and it’s consistently less painful than traditional tattoos. After your session, you won’t experience any further discomfort.

Will SMP work with gray hair?

Yes, those with gray hair can still benefit from the SMP procedure. First, most clients are recommended to cut their hair to a short buzzed length.  When this is done, gray hair does not appear as gray because the hair root itself is darker.  Hair only shows gray as it gets longer. Second, we use a gray-scale pigment that can be adjusted in shade to blend with lighter hair tones.  We simply create a lighter dilution for blending into the existing gray hairs.

If I am lighter skin tone will this treatment still look good?

Yes!  We are able to match the shade of our pigment to a wide range of skin tones.  Whether you are caucasian, black, hispanic, asian, or pacific islander SMP can work for you.

Can I still use Propecia and/or Rogaine after my treatment?

Clients can continue using Propecia during and after their scalp pigmentation procedure.  Rogaine (topical minoxidil) should be suspended during the course of treatment and for 30 days post your final session.  This is to ensure the proper healing and settling of pigment without interference of the chemicals found in Rogaine foam.

Can I wear a hat after treatment?

Yes.  The scalp may be a bit reddish for 2-3 days post session, so we recommend wearing a hat after treatment if you wish to conceal the redness.

Can you help with FUE/FUT scaring?

Yes!  We use our specialized SMP technique to deposit color matched pigment into the scar to reduce visibility.

What is the cost?

The cost is dependent on each individual case and scope of surface area to be covered.  The cost can range anywhere from a small scar treatment starting approximately at $600 to a full head approximately at $5,000.  The exact cost will be quoted during the consultation and will cover the 2-4 sessions required for the treatment.  Annual touch-ups are available for an additional charge.
